| Rainbow Families - Roma Pride 2013 |
Tens of thousands of people paraded through the streets of Rome yesterday to celebrate Gay Pride under the banner “Roma Città Aperta” (Rome, Open City). Italy lags woefully behind the rest of Europe in recognising gay and lesbian marriage or same-sex civil unions. Conspicuous by his absence during yesterday’s march was the newly elected Mayor of Rome Ignazio Marino whose decision not to attend was greeted with dismay in the capital. It remains to be seen if the Democratic Party Mayor will make good on his campaign pledge to introduce a register of same-sex civil unions in the city. Watch this space!
